Homeopathy is a medical art using minuscule, potentized medicinal doses of a “similar” medicine (often referred to as “like” treats “like”) to initiate a healing response within the body. Homeopathics are made from various plants, minerals, metals, etc. often taken as a tablet, granule, or in a liquid in an alcohol and/or water base.
Homeopathics are commonly taken as a granule, tablet, or as a liquid in an alcohol and/or water base. Some companies compound homeopathics into an ointment, suppository, or even injectable forms. Homeopathic medicines are very gentle and have the lowest risk of causing side effects due to the infinitesimal medicinal dosages.
Your treatment plan may include the use of homeopathic medicines, depending upon your health concerns, current medications, allergies, and your wellness goals.
The Development and History of Homeopathic Medicine
Samuel Hahnemann is the father of homeopathy. He was a German physician, chemist, linguist, historian of medicine, and a scientific revolutionary. Early in his medical career he became disillusioned with the state of medical practice and he stopped practicing medicine due to his growing belief that medicine was causing more harm than good. Being a fine linguist (German, Latin, Greek, French, English), he made his living translating medical and other texts. While translating a Materia medica Hahnemann was fascinated by the toxicology section on Peruvian bark, he noted the similarity between the symptoms of Peruvian bark (cinchona) poisoning and the symptoms of malaria (which peruvian bark was used as a medicine for), and he reasoned that this similarity may not be a coincidence, but could be the foundation of the medicines healing potential.
Hahnemann followed precise experiments using various homeopathics; he made observations and took copious notes. In his sixty-year career (1783-1843) he developed the homeopathic model of medical treatment: using similar medicines (whose actions were fully known to the practitioner), individualizing each person’s disease treatment, using a single medicine to avoid the effects of combining two or more drugs.
Homeopathic medicine is considered to be safe with very few side effects (many people will not have any side effects). However, remedies, in sensitive individuals may produce a symptom or aggravation.
